It's Not About You

We run a Karate school or two, or at least we thought we did.  We found out that our 400 students were not ours, but rather our responsibility.  We run the schools for God.

When we first started, we were taught it was not about us, but rather, it was about our students from Greg Silva at United Professionals. Thank you Greg.

Let's talk about that for a moment.  We both have black belts, master belts to be accurate, and have studied many, many arts.  We started, trained, tested and grew in the various arts knowing that it was about us, so changing to a teacher, and making it about someone else, was very difficult.  Especially when your instructor's did not know who it was about.  Let me give you some examples of how you would know it was about the instructor:

1) You see his/her picture everywhere,
2) His/Her trophies are all over the place,
3) Your instructor hates it when you have friends that train somewhere else,
4) You think it is a sign of a disloyal student to enter some other martial arts school,

All of these things we have seen, been told, and believed, so coming to terms with, "it's not about you, it's about them," was a major issue.  Yet, we bought in, so we changed how we thought.

Then we learned that "it was not about them, but about how the feel."  Ok, that makes sense too.  If you want to make some real, the words you say are really not all that important.  Far more important is what you do.  So saying it is about our students was easy.  Testing it required us to do something that changed their behavior. For those of you who are people of faith in Christ, that is expressed in James 1:22, NKJV  "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

So, change lives and measure it by how the feel.

This is where our helpers stopped helping, and we launched into the unknown. Business plans, ways to make money, reasons it is "ok" to make money, and even reasons that we should make money were offered everywhere.  What has never been offered, without profit being the "Goal," was how to serve God with our business. Everything we do, if we are to be followers of Christ, is to be first and foremost about God. Jesus said so many, many places, but one of the most obvious was in the Lord's prayer, "Your kingdom come. Your will be done. On earth as it is in heaven" Matthew 6:10 (NKJV).

So just how do you make it all about God?  Can you make everything you do a form of worship to God?  Can you give credit to the Lord with everything in your business?

Yes, for sure you can.  Just remember that Jesus said the two most important commandments were to Love the Lord, and to Love your Neighbor.  So, Love the Lord and go out and do everything you can to love your neighbor.

That makes our students the major way for us to show Christ's love.  Every choice we make is not based on prosperity, desire, goals or what we were taught in class.  It is based on love.  How do we show love to our students, so they can see and feel the love of the Lord.

It's not about you.  It's about them.  It's about them because it's about the Lord.  Your very life is act of praise if you live it this way. You Serve God. Every act of your life should be taken to serve God.  Not because he serves you, but because you love the Lord.

Bur remember that God's always got your back, if you have reached out and asked for his help.  If you have not, click here to find out how: I want to live for Jesus
